Lay me down was a tune that came out of months of soul searching and troubled times. I remember looking at my wife one night and realized how lucky I was to have her after all my other relationships that had failed. It is her grace and forgiveness that inspired this song.

I like to watch the TV show "Ghost Whisperer". So, I decided to write a song about it. The premise is that someone has just died but is totally aware of his surroundings and is coming to grips with being dead. The first line of the song sets up the story by saying "Alive and well outside myself but I'm still here."

This is one of my favorite songs and is probably the most powerful (Musically) song that I've written. I strive to tell a story in each of my songs and one of the tools I use is the emotion of the music. This one is a simple story of a "Father" and son. I still get shivers when I sing it.

Admittedly, this is one of the most difficult songs that I have ever felt I had to write. Briefly, I am adopted and I've known my entire life. At age eighteen, I embarked on a quest to find my identity, to find my birth parents. Within a week I had found them on my own. I met my bio-mom at a concert that I was doing (I'd sent her tickets) and she told me where she thought I'd find my bio-dad. While we were reminiscing on day, she mentioned that on my birthday every year, she would make me a cake, put candles on it, and make a wish that I was well. My mom and I were amazing friends for many years till one day I asked her if she still loved me. Her response? "No Sean. You don't need my love. You have God's love and that's all you need." It appeared that back then she had not found God, but found religion and it ripped my world apart because there was no justification for it and I was being abandoned again. I was angry at both her and God and it was only recently that I've been able to let that comment go and not hear it in my head every few days. This song had to be written as part of that 'letting go' process.

The rook is in reference to the chess piece; a castle, and a fortress. My emotional fortress whose walls I walked along every day for a number of years to ensure that they were strong and would hold up to anything. This is the demo version of the song. When we go to do the full CD, we'll recut this with a live band.
