About: francis bacon (foster kare)

My thoughts on francis baconFoster Kare is definitely one of my favourite Vancouver bands. No bands that I know of in Vancouver can blend rock, hardcore, jazz, country and punk into one blurry genre better than these guys.

Project Opus and news

It's only 8 more days until Project Opus officially launches the new version of the site. We at the office are very excited about showing the world what the new site can do. It has has been refined with several cool new features--which I won't talk about until I'm sure they exist. The interface is better and the design is better...actually, how about I say "gooder," I like that word.

Go to www.thenervemagazine.com. I have the cover story this month. The Nerve is one of the magazines that I regularly pen for. Oh, the fame, the glory…sometimes it's hard when everywhere you people are like, “Oh my god, are you that writer…oh my god!” Hah…doesn’t happen.

Sex, Drugs, RocknRoll and how to piss people off

Sex, Drugs, RocknRoll
and how to piss people off.

We’re recording our demo at the moment, then comes our Opus page. It seems strange reviewing my own shows, but I am part of the scene and I have the promotion powers of Crom...so why not go to the dark si...
Kidding.
Music is what I live for. The adrenaline you acquire being onstage is indescribable. The first thing I’m gonna do if we get a record deal is buy some smack.
Kidding.
If you are in a band and you get signed…DO NOT TRY HEROIN! It’s really that simple… isn’t it? How many rockstars are no longer because they wanted to party a bit too hardcore? Why not find your drug in Jesus?
Kidding.
All I have to do is mention sex and this story would be complete. Love, or lack of love, is what drives many artists to express themselves. Then they become famous, and they no longer know who their friends are or who truly loves them. You end up with a lust complex.
Now you must understand that I’m a very sarcastic and I will say things in order to provoke a reaction. Don’t ever believe everything you read. How could I be a credible music journalist if I never attempted art.
Kidding.

Alternative to what?

Alternative to what?
By Tony Newton

In the early nineties, there was a massive shakeup in the music industry, brought on by the astounding success of underground acts such as Nirvana, Sonic Youth, The Pixies, Pearl Jam, SoundGarden, and a host of others. Stunned execs witnessed platinum selling arena acts plummet into obscurity as a new generation grasped for something to call their own. Kids couldn’t relate to the hair spray, spandex and meticulous wankery that the 80’s media had hoisted to demigod-like status.

My weekend review

My weekend--the gong show.
By Tony Newton

It seems like I’ve had nothing but bad luck with all these sold out shows this week. Friday night I head out to catch The Black Halos at the Media Club, but alas, the lineup was down the block and it didn’t seem to be moving. Damn, I knew I should have got a press pass. I saw the lead singer, Billy Hopeless, talking to a bouncer outside, so I attempted the “I’m with the press” routine.

Guitars, money, rememberance

Here’s my guitar setup.
1977 Gibson SG
50 watt, Hi-Watt tube amp
4-12” Marshall cab.

It rocks pretty hard. I’ve been gigging with this setup for 5 years now. I usually throw a smeg of digital delay into the mix--this helps with the “epic,” feeling I strive for when writing tunes. I play a lot of hard rock, punk rock, stoner rock…a little jazz, blues. I used to play in my highschool jazz class; in The “B” class. All the misfits were in the “B” class.
