It is no wonder DNA6’s smooth, funky jazz sound blended with rap is fast becoming a part of the Vancouver underground music scene. Jazz prodigies Alex Maher and Mario Vaira (M. Prime) were both trained by Bryan Stovell, acclaimed tutor of Diana Krall, and the sultry notes of that influence linger on the background taking form in Alex’s saxophone and Mario’s guitar. Add to the mix MC Dosia (Brett von Brendel) a local rapper who, previous to DNA6, worked with DJ Ali (Fresh Studios), and what you have is a fun blend of hip-hop and funk that will surely be Vancouver’s next great export. The band formed as DNA in 2004, but has since changed the name because it was already in wide use. Why add the 6? Apparently the choice isn’t random. For the past several years, Alex has been hosting the open mic at the Anza Club, cultivating DNA6’s devoted following, and his Anza nickname is A6.  We asked “A6” some questions in light of their new album, “Human Condition” which will be released this weekend (May 12th at the Backstage Lounge).

How did DNA6 form?

DNA6 formed from the catalogued recordings combining Brett’s and mine songwriting with my production, alongside several accompanists including Mario Vaira (a.k.a. M. Prime).

How do you describe your music?

Our music is a combination of funk, soul, hip-hop and jazz that reflects the variety of influences that we have accrued over the years.

What does Hip-Hop mean to you?

Hip-hop is now more than simply a style of music. It is a form of expression that has transcended through all types of art and culture. It is a lifestyle like rock n’ roll used to be.

Why is your album called Human Condition?

This deals with the majority of the lyrical content, and the fact that many of the songs were written with the modern struggle in mind. With the whole ‘robot’ thing, it plays on de-humanization.

Funniest story from being on the road (or at a show)?

One time, when Brett, Mario and I were flying to Saskatoon, we had Brett convinced that everyone was required to receive an “altitude inoculation” upon reaching the gate before boarding. Brett grew increasingly nervous of the expected needle as we went further through the airport. Sucka!

Worst experience from being on the road (or at a show)?

I once had to play at a Hyundai dealership in Saskatoon.

What is it like being up on stage in front of people? Do you get nervous?

It’s awesome, and, no.

Some of your lyrics talk about serious issues like the destruction of the planet, is that something that is important to you? Why?

Because our planet is being destroyed. It makes any pure enjoyment of anything almost impossible.

What is your favourite lyric that isn't your own on the album?

Who knows. There is no right answer.

Perhaps it is what is *not* said in your lyrics. Was it an active choice not to use stereotypical graphic language (swearing)? Why?

Using “f” bombs often comes from not finding the right words to express yourself.

What other artists have influenced you musically?

Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, D’Angelo, Led Zeppelin, The Police, Sade, The Beatles, U2… shit, everyone that was or still is rad.

There is a lot of collaboration with other artists on this album? Why did you do that, and who are they?

Our music often involves collaboration with other talented artists. On this album, Sean Verreault, Earl Pereira, Jay Davies, Randy Ponzio, Aspire (a.k.a. Josh Hook), Ashleigh Ball, Erica Dee, Zayne, Chad Taylor and Jess Vaira [ed. yes that is Mario’s sister] were all hugely helpful and great.

You guys are pretty well-known amongst independent musicians in Vancouver. What do you think about Vancouver's music scene? Do you find it supportive?

You have to earn everything you get. You have to be happy with an unemotional crowd sometimes.

What bands (outside of DNA6) are you listening to right now?

Hilltop Hoods, Pegz, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Jurassic 5, Seu Jorge

What's next for DNA6?

We are going to do everything we can to get this album in everybody’s stereo!

I have been lurking lately. Been a bit too busy to put real effort into discovering new music. It takes a lot of time. I wasn't sure if there was really anything new on the site and here on the front page is a new band, DNA6. This is cool. Hip Hop, reggae, flamenco, Jazz, R&B, electronica - hell this band is why genres don't make sense anymore. This album is different and immensely LISTENABLE!
