Classical Improvisation

It isn't widely known now, but many of the classical masters were known as great improvisers. People would enjoy great evenings of music by them that would never be heard again, except maybe that the ideas they came up with got incorporated into their written compositions later.

Now, we can record everything and keep what we like. It just takes some mental discipline to ignore the fact that the music is not just for this very moment. But I suspect that sometimes we do have to turn off the recorder and let the music float away into the past, just to clear the channels.
