Clinical Study

Submitted by uberbelly on Fri, 2007-04-06 14:22.

Well, not really clinical and er... not really a study, just curious.

Simple question:

If you had to give up one of your senses, which one (of these two) would you choose to NOT have anymore;

A - your sight

or

B - your hearing?

I have asked people this question for years now, and the answers and reasons have always been intriguing. Please feel free to explain your choice.

Stephen Abbott Sight

If I had to choose, it would be sight. Too many of the things I love need to be heard.

uberbelly sight or hearing

Thanks Stephen!
I've probably asked this question over a thousand times over the last 10 years or so and I have to say that you are in the minority. Overwhelmingly (over 90%) always say that they would give up their hearing. Even music lovers that I know.
I was just curious what the response would be here, on a music site.
Personally, I'd give up my sight in a heartbeat. You can 'hear' the sunrise/sunset, the tide coming in, and already having your sight, then losing it, you still have the images in your head. Even a hockey game would not be the same if I couldn't hear it. And they say that hearing and smell are the most important things for memory.

I couldn't imagine what it would be like to lose my hearing. Devastating.
But then again, I'm not a painter or a photog.

i can see how people might want to keep their hearing but i have heard that many would lose their sight, so i picture the sound of this situation as sounding picturesque ... to say the least. if that sounds odd or looks off ... well, what am i to do about it?

actually, i consider our sight and hearing to be linked just as taste and smell. we hear as much, or more, with our eyes as we do with our ears. one of the things i've learned on the internet is that intonnation and visual clues are not transmitted with typed words. if i couldn't see, then i'd probably not be here answering this and if i couldn't hear ... then i'd probably not be here on project opus to answer this either. it's a dilemma isn't it?!

i so dislike the forced answer questions ... but i supposed i'd rather be killed by fire than drowning ... no, that wasn't the question.

i suppose i pick the cave men over the astronaunts ... no, i mean the ninjas over the pirates ... batman over superm...

i like to see ... i'd miss my hearing ... but there's always a song in my head ... like i was born with a player installed ... compose mode runs often ... but the tracks already stored in my mind are pretty good. so, the eyes have it.

p.s. i really don't want to lose either ... wear ur earplugs when needed.

Jeremy Lim At first, I was going to
Written by Jeremy Lim on Tue, 2007-10-30 14:53

At first, I was going to blurt out, "Give me my hearing." But, now ...

I'll never see my wife. My kids. My grandkids. I'll never drive again. I'll never get to really travel. I can't be independent. I'll have to have someone support me and lead me.

Conversely ..

I'll never get to hear my own vows. I'll never get to hear my child's first words. I'll never get to experience the greatest love I've ever known - music.

I can't decide. I'm torn. All I have to say is that I'm so blessed to have everything I do.

You guys know Helen Keller? I admire her so much. I can't imagine how lonely she must have been ..
