Josh Homme Rips Jimmy Iovine A New One

Lefsetz linked to a great interview by Antiquiet. In it Antiquiet interviewed Josh Homme, and it's honest raw and awesome. I encourage you to read it even if you are not fans of Queens of the Stone Age.

When asked: "When more big bands get free of their contracts and start to do it their own way, how do you think the labels are going to react to losing their grip on what’s been their cash cow for so long?"

Josh Homme responded with surprising "frankness" considering he is still signed to Interscope.

Fuck the labels man, they suck. The last thing they’re stripping down is their own expense accounts and shit. I mean, Jimmy Iovine of Interscope Records takes a private jet or rides first class to tell a band they don’t get tour support. You know what I mean? Fuck that shit, I’m tired of it. And I’m not gonna be quiet because the American label, not Canada, not Europe, but our American label’s fucking us like crazy, so fuck them. Why should I not say anything, what am I afraid of? I’m not afraid of them. One of the things most notable about us is how we work. You could not like the music, you can do anything you want, but we work and there’s no changing that fact. And all I want to do is what we agreed upon. And I’m not even bitter, people say labels are evil, no. They’re just lame. I can’t download my music from the Interscope website, because they gave that power away to iTunes.

WOW! How's that for honesty. I also find it weird that iTunes would have some sort of exclusive on music downloads with Interscope (even at the expense of Interscope's own site). Why in heaven's name would they do that?

More ditties:

Antiquiet: Sounds pretty backwards.
Josh Homme: Sounds like a bunch of fucking idots to me. Sounds like you don’t know your business at all.

This is no-holds-barred. Artists are fed up and blood is being drawn.
You have to go read the interview.

Icee Jake Fuck the labels man

If you sign a deal with a large corporation because you think they care about you or your music or what you have to say. Then when sales don't meet their expectations and they cut back on promotion, distribution, or any financial backing. This is when you start to see this corporation for what it really is...
Heartless Money Grubbing Scum, when they were really this all along.
If you look at any large corporation, weather they sell music or widgets,
they look at the bottom line. They don't sell music because its what they believe in, they sell music to make money.
If you want to make music because its what you believe you were meant to do, then do it yourself even if it means you don't get to be on MTV or go on world tours.
I've only been at this game a short while compared to some I've spoke with over the last five years or so. I know the rules of this game are changing and some of us even break the rules from time to time.
Just remember who your true friends are, and if someone says they believe in you or your music, or what you have to say.
Just remember to ask them about that bottom line... before you sign!

Peace
Jake

I was born with the beauty of music in my heart,
I let it shine through my soul to illuminate the dark.

Jeremy Lim I don't know if I'd be
Written by Jeremy Lim on Mon, 2007-12-10 15:25

I don't know if I'd be excited or scared to meet Josh Homme.

I can imagine a film that compares the lives of the struggling musician versus the plush lifestyle of the music executive.

Think about it: the story of a musician who follows their passion, has their dreams built up, gets broken down by 'reality', and then comes back to win as an underdog.

Formulaic, sure, but it seems more and more true to life. The labels don't see it now, but 50,000,000 YouTube views later, and maybe something would change?

Mm .. N'ah.

Twilights Edge No Label For Me
Written by Twilights Edge on Tue, 2007-12-11 10:02

I couldn't agree more with all this heartfelt pain and anger towards the labels. And there have been many a time in my life that people just never understood why I don't ever want to get signed.

The truth of the matter is, that at least for me, money complicates things in more ways than one. I take money out of the equation and I feel absolutely free with the creative musical process. And with todays technology, people are going to steal it anyway. There are a few honest people that do buy my tunes and I am really grateful for that.

Music industry is really no different than the diamond industry in the aspect of the myth that they created. Many years ago the diamond industry created the myth that the diamond is forever and somehow we bought into that.

Same with the music industry, a myth has been created that somehow if I get signed, I will be living the High Life. Parties, Mansions, expensive cars, women, drugs, etc, etc, etc. All the shit that will get you no where and leave you to an empty life.

Also at 57, my time has expired for any label. It's ashame that I never hit the big time, but then again I have no regrets.

cheers and best wishes,
David
