WOW! What a great way night to spend a Friday night after a long week and the start of a long weekend.
I managed to get my hands on a ticket to the Pink Floyd Laser Spectacular @ the Commodore and instantly cancelled all other plans to go see it….a decision I do not regret whatsoever. I love Pink Floyd. Their music is so relaxing and hypnotic as it is – let alone with lasers in what I would say is one of Vancouver’s best venues…..so sweet!
I got there about 15 minutes before the doors open and once inside realized that there couldn’t have been more then 20 people there. The show started at 8:15pm and by the time the show was about to start, the room had filled up and everyone had these paper glasses that looked like ones you use for a normal 3-D show, except these glasses create prisms out of all the lights and enhance the lasers. Cool.
The show started off with “The Dark Side of The Rainbow.” This is when the album Dark Side of The Moon is synchronized with the movie Wizard of Oz. My roommates and I did this using vinyl but you can also do it with the CD. If anyone’s interested, let me know and I put the directions here.
For the parts of the music that didn’t have much to do with the movie, they just used lasers, which were amazing with the glasses. But for the parts where they showed where the movie lined up, you couldn’t see the images with the glasses on. So you take them off to watch the scenes in Kansas that go perfectly with “Breathe” or the tornado taking the house away to “The Great Gig in The Sky” and later on to watch the munchkins dance to “Money” (not too sure what Beavis & Butthead have to do with anything but they were there).
After playing the album ‘Dark Side of The Moon there was a short intermission. Then we were back for ‘The Wall’ album. They didn’t play the whole album but they got most of the popular hits in there, again playing scenes from Alan Parker's Pink Floyd the Wall
That included songs like “Another Brick in The Wall pt2”
This picture gives you an idea of what the glasses did to the lasers and lights
I kick myself and know i need a faster camera when this could have been an amazing picture (i'M sad)
The second half was pretty much all lasers, adding visuals to the music with songs like “Mother,” and ”Wish You Were Here” which showed a montage of celebrities that have passed away like Elvis, John Lennon, Michael Hutchence, Jim Belushi, Van Morrison, Kurt Kobain, and many more. “Comfortably Numb” “Young Lust” showing images of a “dirty woman” dancing around.
Anyway – it was a great night and if anyone ever has the opportunity to check it out, I would recommend it.
Hmmm….what to see next? Anyone have any suggestions? I’m going to see what the week ahead has in store and let you know.
Hope everyone is having a great long weekend!
