the disagreement  the disagreement
Reviewed by amos dettonville on March 31, 2007

I am listening to the whole album at this moment ... but right out of the box "the disagreement" has driven me to write ... within about 2 measures i was thinking and smiling, "American Football!!!" - which is a huge plus in my book ... i hope it's taken as a "huge" compliment! the other word that came to mind (not sure exactly why now) was "dashboard confessional" and "pedro and the lion"... the second track has kicked in, i suppose people who haven't swirled in the orbit of American Football and the polyrhythmic emo-esque (sorry for that word ... it's meant as an aim at the sound not calling the sargasso sea emo at all) might not be familiar with the kind of music i like to call, "echoing reflections of living". it's a land of lost loves, the inner workings, (cogs, gears n springs) of relationships, and spaces where the heart hits the voice and tries to tell the "how it feels" of things not so easy to put into words. concerning this type of music - sargasso sea is a classic and perfect example - bang on! i'll grab some words from the review of American Football given at the link above - because this album captures what i love about their 1999 eponymous release: "all twinkly guitars and polyrhythms carefully and lovingly sculpted into a whirlwind of sounds and textures. But they shade their lilting melodies with an undercurrent of melancholy that adds depth without becoming maudlin." the School of Library Sciences totally captures those words above. a great track. i happen to love this ... sensitive young man ... music. the polyrhythms actually accent the angst and resolve; the contemplation and reflection; the black and white photograph with paint brush stroked highlights; kind of tunes that can be found on this excellent album. i sincerely hope that sargasso sea is getting all the props and attention this excellent music deserves. if this was recorded in 200? - then it still needs to be held up there on the shelf - right beside AF and all the great sounds found at polyvinyl records. i'd write more ... but excuse me - i've got an album to preview again and some songs to favorite :-) i am not sure why i stopped at 4 stars actually, maybe it was more that i have been too generous with my ratings in the past - you can tack another star or two up there if you wish ;-) peac4d. amos

Wishing for Remixing!  Wishing for Remixing!

I gotta agree with David. You've got four great tracks. Lyrics, melody, progression, heart, feeling, but then this nasty drum machine kicks in and changes the whole thang! Can you remix them without? It almosts sounds like they were an experiment or an afterthought. No offense, but the beats are very 'last year'.
