Welcome to Project Opus! Tell us a little about yourself!

What do you listen to? What instruments do you play? Where do you live? What do you do when you're not doing music? Are you a musician or music lover?

We'd love to hear more about you, so introduce yourself any way you'd like!

Hello, everyone. Though I'm not new, I thought I'd kick things off.

I'm a bedroom composer from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. As of right now, I do everything with FLStudio7, a Virus TI, and a pair of Sony headphones. Nothing crazy, but there's still a lot of room for me to grow with it.

I tend to go all over the place when it comes to genres, but I usually work in trance, new age, and hip hop. Oftentimes I'll mix a lot of different styles together. It creates some very interesting (and oftentimes pretty sweet) results.

Have a listen:

When it comes to instruments, I've taught myself piano and drums. I like to think I can sing too, but I'm a poor judge of that.

You know when you ask people what they listen to, and they say, "Oh, I listen to everything?" It's pretty hard, but I try to anyways. My taste in music has jumped continents a lot. I really got into the whole J-Pop / K-Pop / C-Pop thing. From there, I jumped into electronic, which meant I started listening to a lot of European music. In my last jaunt, I've made my way back to North America and I've been getting my fill of Top 40 for the past six months.

If you've got any interesting music, give me a shout. I'd love to hear it!

Also not new here, but this seems like a good space to reintroduce myself....

I'm TeachONE, AKA Wes Pepper... I write lyrics, and make instrumental/electronic music with Ableton Live and a couple different Midi-Controllers. I've been writing lyrics for about as long as I can remember, spinning records since my junior year of college, and using Ableton Live 6 since about this time last year. There's certainly a lot of music I like, as well as a significant amount of music I don't like. I like music that has meaning, music that makes me dance without being irritating, and music that is fun without being degrading or mysogynistic... I try not to be the music snob who only listens to underground or independent music, but often times come off that way. I do like some mainstream music, but admittedly those artists are few and far between.

Hopefully you'll find that the music I make meets those very same guidelines. I write lyrics in the form of Hip-Hop, for which I also create instrumentals (for myself and many other emcees including many of my former students). I also ceate electronic music that is somewhat hard to classify... I jump from Trip-Hop, to Trance, to D&B, to a combination of electocustic guitar tracks mixed with an electronic sound. Often, I mix all of these genres together and come up with things that no one even attempts to place in one genre or another... I love the idea of expanding the "cutting edge" of music while also holding true to the theory that has made music so resonating for such a long time.

I love to talk about music, and I truly enjoy the experience of learning other people's techniques. I'm also someone who always returns the favor when somebody critiques my tracks....

Peace

Hey kids. You know what time it is. It's sAro? time.
I've been making music in various forms for about 9 or more years. I started writing for guitar and vocals way back and got into the underground electronic scene about 5 years ago in Santa Barbara, CA. Music is in my blood. I'm always working and experimenting with something. The tracks that I have up were made in Live and Battery using a Novation synth. I'm not too concerned with styles and genres, but I tend to gravitate towards breaks in either trip hop, down-tempo or drum and bass. I've been playing music as a solo musician and DJ for just about as long as I care to think about. Feel free to peep my wares.

CD: It's a Complicated World

Home: Toronto,Canada

Style: Rock

Quote: "In this complicated world of ours, it’s good to know that smart and passionate people like Robert Nix are diligently using music to understand this complex home planet of ours."

By Dan MacIntosh

This CD's title reminds us that it’s a complicated world after all, and its creator, Robert Nix, doesn’t try to convince us otherwise. Nix’s singing voice sometimes sounds eerily like Jim Morrison of The Doors, who was himself an especially complicated individual. The world may be a complicated place, but Nix applies basic, good musical values to his songs here.

In addition to this CD’s title track, “A Black Spot On Humanity” also reveals how Nix consistently applies a big picture viewpoint to his lyrics. His songs alternate between being guitar-based and keyboard-based, with “A Black Spot On Humanity” exemplifying one of his keyboard-oriented songs. This latter track also utilizes orchestral string elements.

In contrast to his mostly wide angle lens lyrics, “She Means A Lot To Her Friends And Family” is positively microscopic in comparison. Nix can become extremely passionate while he’s singing, which sets the contrastingly quiet “It’s The Day’s End” apart from the rest. In this complicated world of ours, it’s good to know that smart and passionate people like Robert Nix are diligently using music to understand this complex home planet of ours.

The New Guy

Hi all.

I am new to this site and I have just been checking out all the info that is available on here...what a great site.

Although I have a great appreciation of all types of music and play the guitar to an intemediate level I set up a page on here on behalf of my brothers band "the_bacchants", they rock.
The thing is he is rubbish on computers (he knows his way around a drum kit though..lol) so I am just putting his stuff out the for all to see and hear.

He is part of a three peice rock / punk outfit from Manchester England (brad -Drums, Mike - Bass, Thom - Guitar. Inspired by - Rancid, Transplants, NOFX, The Clash, Jonny Cash, White Stripes to name but a few.

They write some pretty cool, short hard hitting song's that I think a lot of people will like. I know he should probably be on here himself and he would be able to if he would put the drumsticks down for a second and learn --> This band are all about the music and who can blame them.

Any comments would be great.

Peace out

Kev

Carolyn: Hello! Welcome

Carolyn:
Hello! Welcome aboard! Had a listen to your songs. Sounds like you were playing live ... where was this? Sounds like a three person band?

Kev:
Your brother's pretty good, but it's a bit hard hearing what they're saying .. that's really nice of you to step up for him and promote his music.

I've got two sisters. The older one tells me about all her friends and their music, but when it comes to mine, it's like she's ashamed of it. Sad Sigh. Good guy, man. Good guy. Have you met the Monochrome Museum folks? They're from around your area and promote indie artists. Check them out at their Project Opus page.

Cheers Bro

Hi Jeremy.

Thanks for having a listen. I have returned the favour and checked out your music which I think is awesome. You are obviously a very talented musician and composer and have a great ear for music. Your music is really atmospherical and i am sure your sister agrees with me but she probs won't show it.. lol Smiling.

The sound on the_bacchants recording is a bit rough but it is just done on a cheap 4 track and I am looking at getting them into a studio over the next couple of weeks to "clean things up a little" so i will deffo keep you posted. Thanks for the heads up on the Monochrome Museum folks....I will check them out.

Peace out bro.

HiI am from the Northwest

Hi

I am from the Northwest of the UK, currently knocking out some dubious tracks via Reason

I was formerly a songwriter/drummer/singer for a variety of unsigned acts in the late eighties/early nineties, gigging in and around London, and am currently flogging my back catalogue of recordings along with my more recent offerings to anyone that will have them.

In the process I've met a fair few people that have helped, or want to help promote their and own and others musical output via the web.

Coming to Project Opus as a refugee from Mperia I hope to continue the spirit of co-operation that keeps me attempting stuff like this on the web

Seizure later

Jeremy,

Thanks for the welcome, I'm a veritable jack of all trades, master of none LOL!

With regards to co-operation and co-promotion a quick look at the Mperia Legacy blog (if you can wade through the rambling - one drawback of blogs is that no-one interupts you when you're in full flow)might hint at what I envision.

The collapse of Mperia bought home to me that no matter how good a site is, if folk aren't using it, if its not generating enough traffic or revenue then sooner or later it will fold.

Having found project Opus via David's blog article on Mperia, I still subscribe to the view that listeners need to be fed music, not that many are commited enough to actively seek it out, and this is doubly true when it comes to new music.

Elsewhere in his blog David has championed the notion of "taste makers" and although he advocates that these should be individuals, given the fragmentation of broadcasting in the 21st Century, those individual voices get lost.

I feel that there is an opportunity for this site to become such a taste maker if, through the collective efforts of the site and it members, Project Opus can become THE place to listen to new music.

That very quality should lead to it being THE place where bands want to have their material showcased. (I know I've lost track of where I've got material, where its given away for free, where it's available for free)

I'm still playing with all the features that Project Opus has, so it may be that the functionality (particularly collaborative filtering and driving traffic to the site) is already here, but I think this palce has amazing potential.

Hi Carlito:

That's a fantastic blog post, and true example of smart marketing. People are getting lazier, and are looking for quick ways to immerse themselves in something. At the same time, they expect something extremely relevant.

There's no way we can read minds. (Pandora is probably closest to this, with it's artist comparison.) However, the taste maker concept is probably one of the smartest filtering tools out there. You mentioned it on a meta level, but it works on a microlevel too. There's a reason we had mix tapes: because our friends had freaking awesome music.

If you have any questions or concerns about the site, please feel free to ask. Let's see if we can make it what we all hope it will become.

Rhythmically diverse and

Rhythmically diverse and complex is right. The first song I heard was 'The First Encounter'. With the double bass going, I thought you were going to pull a Sonata Arctica and hammer it out the whole way through, but as I went through the rest of the songs, I did find that diversity, and it's really nice.

I like how you guys base your songs around the concept of someone losing their grip on things. I did a song recently about the same thing, so I can definitely relate with your work. Give it a go, I'd love to hear what you think!

Wow. I'm in love with "Departure". Are you guys open to remixes? You've got a wicked melody going on. Would love to trance / house it out. (Probably the latter, since it's closer to the original tempo.)

Flavour of the month or not, you do them really well. Like, -really- well. Same goes for Cry of Silence above. I'm always amazed at who pops up in here. You're actually quite diverse. You can capture more than one mood, which isn't all that common. I really like your stuff. Can't say I'd blast it in my car, but I can definitely appreciate it!

Hello !!

Hi there,

My name is James Sanger, I'm a song writer, producer programmer. My work has appeared on many well known records.

I thought I"d set up an act here under the name 'Sounds like Opium' as an outlet for my lifelong passion for experimental ambient music. I have been involved in the
R and D of a new musical scaling system which has truly psycho acoustic properties.

I am drawing on my experience as a producer and programmer coupled with my interest in this new scaling system to work towards creating music that simply sounds like opium.

If you are into hearing something genuinely new and experiencing the psycho acoustic effect of 'binaural entrainment' with sub harmonic beating creating alpha and beta states of consciousness within your mind !! then check it out.

yours sincerely,

James

That's some really trippy stuff, James! What records have you worked on?

You'll have to forgive me, but what's this new music scaling system? When I'm listening to your work, is there anything in particular I should be listening for? A pattern? A pulse? A certain frequency range? A panning effect? I'd love to hear more about what it takes for you to put together a song.

Personally, I'm moving further and further away from traditional 'songs'. Trying to put together pieces that still have traditional structure, but describe a vivid picture in your mind.

I'd love to hear what you think of my stuff too! (You can find an example below.)

fast scale delivery service

It's always intrigued me how the concept of 'music to the ears' can move beyond the normal and far into the fringes, while pulling what is termed 'normal' along with it.
ie. If our understanding of Country music makes it become 'normal' and we go out on the fringes and listen to John Coltrane we would initially say that he is not normal. However once his patterns of sound become familiar to our mind's ears, our boundaries will move and 'normal' will expand.
The same goes with musical scales. The 12 tone tempered scale that is commonly used, was developed so that many instruments in our society could easily play together and sound harmonious. Some composers play with this concept and introduce notes into scales that sound 'out of tune' or 'not normal'. The beauty of this is the observation that by playing these notes more than once and incorporating them into patterns of notes, they eventually become accepted as normal.

The cello players knows this because they ain't go no frets to fence them in. As long as they don't try to play the piano parts.

the lucy scale is a whole

the lucy scale is a whole scaling sustem of 25 notes (or 19) notes an octave that is nothing to do with the existing Equal temperament.....it is not equal temperement divided again by two for example.....In fact it is a scaling system within which you have 'long notes and short notes' rather thatn tones and semi tones... it was conceived by the 17th century horologist 'john harrison' who designed and built the clocks that enabled himm to with the kings prize for creating a workable system for finding your longitude at sea.

The whole sub harmonic beating side of things is about the beating of the notes against each other relating to their pitch ...you know how you can tune a guitar harmonically and how when you are close to the right note the harmonic starts to oscilates slower and slower until it is in tune. In conventional scaling you are looking for a kind of 'artificially sweetened' scale where notes oscillate perfectly in tune providing you are in certain keys..... this works fine until say you want to play a C chord on a gtr as well as a G.., in conventional tuning you will never get them both to sing perfectly in tune.....this is where the Lucy scale steps in..... there is some very detailed maths and physics for those among you whod like to learn more about it..look at 'www.lucytune.com'

Basically what you are looking for is a collection of notes in the music thsat are all beating. creating a sort of massage for your brain. a harmonious sub harmonic massage....

.BTW. Whales birds and dolphins use Lucy scale intervals to cominnicate in. That why birds don't sing like R2D2....check out the music and see if you feel anything while hearing it. It takes a bit of getting used to...I'll happily expalin it more in greater depth, perhaps next time not at 2.30 am !!

cheers,

James Sanger

Us

Hey, name's Melody, our band, HAVEN. We're a three piece out of Delta BC who love to put on an amazing performance, nothing is more disappointing than a boring live show so we try to kick it up. You can check us out here on Opus or our more frequented myspace [www.myspace.com/havenonline] . The music on our sites are old and with the previous line-up, we'll have some good quality ones up in a couple of months.

Cheers,

Melody, HAVEN.

Hi there everyone.

Well I just found out about Project Opus through a friend/connection and was definitely interested to find out what all the fuss was about. Wow - had no idea there was a community like this ... I'm a guitar player from England and since I've been in Vancouver I've been listening to lots of world music - which, to be honest, is often not spankingly new. This looks like a place where I can find new stuff on my own, get new tunes (and events) recommended by others and really discover some new music.

Recently I bought the guitar of my dreams - a Gibson Dove - new but a vintage design and it's lovely - gave up smoking and said if I had a smoke in the 30 day return period the Dove would have to go back - the Dove's still here and I'm smoke free - cool.

Well, I'll be here often and should have some kind of profile going soon - see ya around.

Doogs.

Hello.

Ballerina Black is a band that has quickly made a name for themselves on the L.A. scene since they formed in late 2007. A blend of 80s mope rock and early Factory Records ambience sans the elitism, the Los Angeles trio consists of singer/songwriter Bobby Moynahan, bassist Esli Sugich and drummer Jeff Kite. Although Moynahan is the primary songwriter, the band’s sound is very much a product of each individual band members’ eclectic musical tastes. The result is pop music with a grunge-era aesthetic. Driven by their raucous and inspired live performances, they have been embraced by the ever-evolving and often fickle patronage of the L.A. music scene, spawning new fans by the droves at every stop.
