Terry McBride and Nettwerk...Innovators or Internet Bullies?

Terry McBride and Nettwerk...Internet visionary or schoolyard Bully?

Yesterday I received an email from my friend David Gratton of Project Opus Technologies (also known as www.projectopus.com). It contained a cease and desist order from Nettwerks’ lawyers demanding two songs, Captive and Temptation, be immediately removed from my Project Opus web-page. Now these two songs were co-written and recorded 20 years ago with Sarah McLachlan and I had them uploaded and available for streaming from my Project Opus page. They were just part of my ‘archive’ of old songs that I wrote and played bass guitar on. Now, I co-wrote these two songs so you would think that I had/have the right to post these songs on my web-pages such as Opus and MySpace BUT think again!

My First Heart-Attack!

So, what do you do after your first heart attack? You heard me right...I just turned 44 years old and had my first heart attack (not that I'm hoping for a second one!). Well, actually it was more of an angina attack, my heart didn't actually stop but I can tell you it definately wasn't a pleasant experience. So let me explain a little bit...less than a month ago I had an experience where I was just walking up the hill heading home from Vancouver's Wreck Beach. It's quite a steep hill but I've done ...

New Single from The Verve

Last week The Verve announced they're releasing their new CD on August 19th. My heart briefly pitter-pattered with excitement as I read the news, but I also was a bit fearful. What will the band will sound like 11 years after the release of Urban Hymns? Will any of their songs ever get past the Bittersweet Symphony comparison? Will this record be an improvement over Richard Ashcroft's solo efforts? You can understand my skepticism. This week the band is streaming their new single Love Is Noise on their MySpace in an effort to put those fears to rest. It's a straight-ahead rocker (no, it doesn't sound like Bittersweet Symphony or Lucky Man) that should do its part to tweak the public's interest in the band again - at least until we can get more than this tiny taste of the new record.

SOL 3...Grizzly Adams? Farewell Show!

Hello Friends:SOL 3 is sad to announce the upcoming departure of our good friend and current drummer Rick "Grizzly" Adams from the band. After dozens of shows, the recording of our Monster CD, Ultrafade, and taking the internet radio and podcast world by storm, Grizzly has decided that it's time for him to move back into the wilderness to be with ...

RIAA Keeps Settlement Money, Artists May Sue

Quote:
When EMI, Universal Music and Warner music reached settlement agreements with the likes of Napster, KaZaA and Bolt, they collected hundreds of millions of dollars in compensation - money that was supposed to go to artists whose rights had been allegedly infringed upon when the networks were operating with unlicensed music.

Now, according to an article, the managers of some major artists are getting very impatient, as it appears the very people who were supposed to be compensated - the artists - haven’t received anything from the massive settlements. They say the cash - estimated to be as much as $400m - hasn’t filtered through to their clients and understandably they’re getting very impatient.

Top Opus Track/Opus Music Chart

Okie dokie, it's high time that this dinosaur got updated or just deleted...
this old 'algorithm' system is just not working and, I'm sorry but, I'm just tired of seeing the same old names and music listed as top Opus music. The system is just not including any of the new music (and hasn't for the loooooongest time)
and doesn't, for some reason, even include some of the older tracks here on Opus. I remember that SOL 3 had over 500 plays in one day, and never even cracked the chart. AT ALL!

Lavaman: Exclusive Interview on Project Opus

New to the Project Opus community, Scotland’s Lavaman was quickly recognized for their virtuoso guitar work. With Al on lead and long-time co-writer John on bass, Lavaman takes listeners by storm with their new album, “Back to Earth.”

Inspired by their life experiences, “Back to Earth” has been in the works for nearly a year. More than an example of musical craftsmanship, it’s also quite the technical feat. With little more than a handful of guitars, a couple of LINE 6 PODs, Cubase SX, Addictive Drums, and a pair of broken hi-fi speakers, the album remains a sonic marvel.

Heaven Comes Down - uberbelly

Heaven Comes Down - Artist: uberbelly Album: Belly lint, From: Vancouver, Please Support uberbelly and purchase 'Heaven Comes Down' from ProjectOpus.com (http://www.projectopus.com/uberbelly), Date Posted: November 14, 2007

The original version recorded in 1987.
Dedicated to Benny Hinn.

HEAVEN COMES DOWN
Look at these hands, same as yours, same as you
Though the black glove of sleep will hold me tonight,
Whose eyes will I have seen?

Though we laugh and we love and give with our hearts
We are pushed in a corner
Away from those who’ve been told of love
They have nothing to fear my god

When heaven comes down...

When your number is flashed upon the screen of your life
Pull out your wallet and show some faith
You’ll be walking on silk, you’ll be walking on coals
You’ll be walking in a heaven paved with gold

You can hardly stand up, oh you don’t want to sit down
Do you need his help just to breathe?
Oh, I’m not going to heaven let it come down on me
Passing judgement of guilt and greed

When heaven comes down...

The only two on the dance floor of a sad, seedy bar
Another vision of hope and faith
Fleeting shadows of a star that was once so bright
Fading in my memory

I hear noises from a vacant mind
Noises from the gates of hell
Noises from the mouths of babes
Too many people on this ladder to heaven
It’s going to crash...
When heaven comes down...

Recorded with the band OFFICE, 1982 at the CBC - Edmonton, Alberta.
A song that I think represents the night of infamy in it's angst-ridden tempo and musical style.
OFFICE was: Jeff Sawatzky - bass, Malcolm Swann - vocals, sax, Vincent Evans - guitar, Phil Young - drums.

TeachONE: Exclusive Interview on Project Opus

Wesley (TeachONE) Pepper has one goal – to reach people with his music and improve the communities around him.

As an educator for five years and a devout follower of hip-hop since his early teens, Wesley has married his love for teaching and his passion for music by developing three programs that encouraged learning through hip-hop. Away from school, he is an emcee and a producer who has collaborated with musicians who hail from everywhere – including his own classroom.

uberbelly: Exclusive Interview on Project Opus

Jeff (uberbelly) Sawatzky is a long-time member of the Project Opus community, and veteran to the music industry.

Starting his career in Edmonton, Jeff played with the bands Office and Voice as a bassist, guitarist, and keyboardist before moving on to his own project, Savage Nurses, and another band, Darkroom. After some time, Jeff and his drummer, Sherri Leigh, sought out a new experience. Together, they moved to Vancouver to play as the rhythm section for the then unknown Sarah McLachlan. Jeff wrote and performed on SARAH's debut album “Touch” in 1988. After two years of touring and production of Sarah’s second album, Jeff went on his way to pursue his own music once again.

It's all right here on Project Opus

What a wonderful evening I had last night. I got home around 7pm, kicked off the shoes, cracked a brew, stuffed my pipe and just settled in to listen to all of the incredible new uploads on Opus.
Ian Babington, Dead Letter Office, J-Lim, some Death Metal from Japan, Jon Huffer, Joe Pop, the instrumental stylings of Twilight's Edge and the AWESOME new album by Arctic. I even enjoyed the electronic/drum & bass offerings! Though not usually my bag I certainly enjoyed the sub-woofer workout!

KeeLime: Exclusive Interview

Lou Rolli, a singer and guitarist, is a newcomer to the Project Opus community, but an experienced musician. With a guitar placed in his hands at the

tender age of eleven, Lou Rolli has taken music and made it his life's journey. Today, he takes that path as lead of Canadian band KeeLime.

If passion and devotion alone made rock stars, KeeLime would lead the charts. It was my pleasure to sit down with Lou for this edition of 12

Questions.

I've been on Opus since it went public and I've never come across someone so rude!
The Marketplace - Rules and Terminology

This is an ever-evolving document, so feel free to leave comments and suggestions. The latest rules will always be found in the first post (this one).

Rules
When listing items, please make your posts as specific as possible. "[FS] M-Audio Radium 49, Quirky Modulation Wheel, USB powered, $135" says a lot more than "Keyboard for sale".

Once a sale has been completed, please make a post in your topic so that everyone knows that the item is no longer for offer or required for purchase.

Project Opus and RapSpace (an online community dedicated to independent hip hop artists) have joined forces to try to bring the two communities together. Right now, we’re testing to see if there’s an interest in some cross-genre collaborations.

String - uberbelly

String - Artist: uberbelly Album: released as single only, From: Vancouver, Please Support uberbelly and purchase 'String' from ProjectOpus.com (http://www.projectopus.com/uberbelly), Date Posted: May 22, 2007

A song about poverty and faith.

String

I stare down at the street
There’s this piece of string
It’s tied around his shoes, yeah, at least he’s got his shoes
Some times that seems like, it’s more than enough
At least he’s walking—at least he’s talking

Yeah, it seems, that he’s got something to hold on to
Something tied around his waist
May be the only thing holding him together
Maybe the only thing

And he said, “At least I’ve got something to hold on to
Yeah, it’s just a piece of string
But it can wrap around my heart
Keep it from falling apart”

And he said, “Hey listen and look, where you are
You can’t help but step lightly
Do you need something to wrap around your faith?”

I need something to hold on to
I need to hold on to you…

Exclusive Interview: DNA6

It is no wonder DNA6’s smooth, funky jazz sound blended with rap is fast becoming a part of the Vancouver underground music scene. Jazz prodigies Alex Maher and Mario Vaira (M. Prime) were both trained by Bryan Stovell, acclaimed tutor of Diana Krall, and the sultry notes of that influence linger on the background taking form in Alex’s saxophone and Mario’s guitar. Add to the mix MC Dosia (Brett von Brendel) a local rapper who, previous to DNA6, worked with DJ Ali (Fresh Studios), and what you have is a fun blend of hip-hop and funk that will surely be Vancouver’s next great export. The band formed as DNA in 2004, but has since changed the name because it was already in wide use. Why add the 6? Apparently the choice isn’t random. For the past several years, Alex has been hosting the open mic at the Anza Club, cultivating DNA6’s devoted following, and his Anza nickname is A6. We asked “A6” some questions in light of their new album, “Human Condition” which will be released this weekend (May 12th at the Backstage Lounge).

PROJECT OPUS REDUX - We need your help!

Dear Project Opus Members and supporters,

There is a number of things I need to share with all of you:
1. The new events mod has been delayed.
2. We have licensed some Project Opus technologies to an important and influential music broadcaster. This is the reason the events mod is being delayed. This license MAY, later on in the year, provide Project Opus bands and artists with another channel for distributing their music.

Well, not really clinical and er... not really a study, just curious.

Simple question:

If you had to give up one of your senses, which one (of these two) would you choose to NOT have anymore;

A - your sight

or

B - your hearing?

I have asked people this question for years now, and the answers and reasons have always been intriguing.
