Left 4 Dead is a new zombie survival horror game from valve who made counter strike, half-life, team fortress and more. They have a good reputation and any game they make its good.

Well i have 2 songs to release today, one of which was made earlier but i was putting off uploading it. These songs are pretty differant, one is my usual sounding style and one is very much more acoustic/live sounding although it is tweaked out with a electronic beat too.

You can from your own opinions of coarse, i’d love to know what you think of each of them, comments are open!

This song is my normal style although it features a lot more vocals then usual, using vocals from a remix contest pack i put together a little tune i like.

I didnt make this for the contest but just found the samples fitting to what i wanted to create.

I also wanted to mention the new domain name, for awhile now www.omnifarious-music.com was upsetting me for a few reasons,

It was just to long
Nick Cave/Bad Seeds Catalog Gets Deluxe Reissues

Nick Cave has joined the push to up sell devote fans with "premium packages". Artists and labels have been late to grasp the fact that their core fan base is not impressed nor do the highly value MP3 by themselves. Expect a serious 'pile on' in the coming 6-12 months as everyone embraces new digital packaging ideas.

Dapper don Nick Cave and his old friends the Bad Seeds must be used to the deluxe treatment by now; after all, they're rock royalty if anybody is. But the band's monstrous back catalog? It may have never been treated so good before.

Mute Records is set to reissue remastered, 5.1 surround sound-enhanced versions of the entirety of the Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds discography, with the initial batch of four titles due later in 2008. Cave and the Seeds' first four discs-- 1984's From Her to Eternity, 1985's The Firstborn Is Dead, 1986's Kicking Against the Pricks, and 1986's Your Funeral... My Trial-- make up that initial batch, and boy, are they in for a treat. The collector's editions will be double disc sets containing both the remastered stereo album and the new surround mix, B-sides, and new liner notes. Each album will also contain one of a series of short films (collectively titled Do You Love Me Like I Love You?) made by the UK-based team of Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard.

Indeed, Forsyth and Pollard are putting together Do You Love right now, and they need your help! "Have you been affected by the songs of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds?" they ask on their website. If the answer is yes, and you'd like to explain just how in front of a camera, you should probably click here pronto.

In other Cave rumblings, the theatrical production of Georg Büchner's Woyzeck-- for which Nick Cave and Bad Seed/Dirty Three dude Warren Ellis composed music a couple years back-- is coming to NYC. Woyzeck will play at the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Howard Gilman Opera House on October 15, 17, and 18 as part of BAM's Next Wave Festival.

Sony buys out Bertelsmann. Recorded music is not worth what it use to be.

Sony has announced that they are buying the 50% stake in Sony BMG held by German media giant Bertelsmann in a deal valued at $1.2 billion. The deal is a touch convoluted but it basically results in Bertelsmann receiving approximately $900 million in value for its 50% stake in Sony BMG.

"Last year the BMG unit saw revenue fall 27% to $2.25 billion while operating profit dropped 46% to $144 million." Bertelsmann obviously wanted out. The business is crumbling, and they are in no position to try and leverage the master recordings like Sony can with its electronic products. Sony understands that Apple leverages music to sell iPods. They should be able to do the same.

As long as i keep trying everyday i should be back to normal again.

Well i decided today that i wanted to make another cd of music. I think when you create a certain number of similar sounding tracks or tracks from a certain point of your life or anytime a bunch of music just fits together because sometime the tracks compliment each other and should be together.

I removed an old album today, one that i had thrown together just for the heck of it and thats something you should never do especially if you ever want someone to take your music seriously and actually ...

It was just to long
The dash, made it even longer!

Of coarse .com .net .org and just about everything else was taken bu ...

Pumpkins Set First Anniversary Gig, Corgan Gets Guitar

Hey kids! Wanna sound just like your real-life guitar hero, Smashing Pumpkins leader Billy Corgan? Oh sure, you could stub that big toe pretty good, then make haste towards the microphone... or, er, you could head on down to wherever Fender instruments are sold and pick up one of the iconic guitar makers' new line of Billy Corgan Stratocaster guitars.

"Designed," as the press material would have us believe, "for maximum sound versatility"-- so that's why Mellon Collie was so long-- "the new Billy Corgan Stratocaster is an especially modern take on the iconic Fender Strat® model, built especially for a high-gain sound and designed to create Corgan's signature mid-'90s buzz saw tone."

Guitar tech geeks, rejoice: the Billy signature Strat sports "three DiMarzio pickups (two of which are custom-wound for the instrument), a string-through hard-tail bridge, jumbo frets, a satin nitrocellulose lacquer finish and a vintage tweed case." You can fondle Corgyboy's frets on one of two axes: the first, with "an Olympic White finish, with a black pickguard" and the other, "black finish with a white pickguard, reflective of Corgan's signature style." Yeah, he does like black and stuff.

Billy and company are still planning those big anniversary runs in NYC, L.A., and Chicago, though that's going down in August-- not, as first believed, in September. The first Chicago area date was just announced for August 9 at Hammond, Indiana's Horseshoe Casino.

The Gish shows, too, are on, though those have been moved back to 2009. The Gish box is still in the works, and the band wants your vintage Pumpkins photos. And there's also that DVD of their Fillmore run from last summer, but no further details have emerged since our last report. You guitar guys never can keep to a schedule, can you?

Radiohead Use Fancy Technology in Camera-Free Video

Take that, conventional music video-making wisdom! Radiohead don't have time for your petty, archaic devices, such as, um, the camera. Indeed, they've gone and made a new music video for In Rainbows' woozy "House of Cards" that doesn't make use of a camera at all!

Nope, the "Cards" clip instead utilizes two state-of-the-art fancy-pants hyperoptic-mumbo-jumbo-something-or-other multimedia technologies known as Geometric Informatics and Velodyne Lidar. Um, press release, a little help please?

Ah, here we go: "The Geometric Informatics scanning system employs structured light to capture detailed 3D images at close proximity, and was used to render the performances of Radiohead's Thom Yorke, the female lead, and several partygoers. The Velodyne Lidar system uses multiple lasers to capture large environments in 3D, in this case 64 lasers rotating and shooting in a 360 degree radius 900 times per minute, capturing all of the exterior scenes and wide party shots." Well shucks, ain't that somethin'?

The James Frost-directed video hasn't gone live quite yet, but when it does, you'll find it by clicking here. Until then, feast your eyes on some more stills presumably from the clip that Radiohead posted on Dead Air Space late last month.

Thus spake Thom Yorke in the press release: "I always like the idea of using technology in a way that it wasn't meant to be used, the struggle to get your head round what you can do with it. I liked the idea of making a video of human beings and real life and time without using any cameras, just lasers, so there are just mathematical points-- and how strangely emotional it ended up being."

Finally, much like they butchered "Nude" into convenient little iTunes pieces for your remixing pleasure, Radiohead will be sharing data used in the creation of their new video with fans, so that fans can do their own crazy, rave-y things with it. And good news for folks who think Velodyne Lidar sounds like a character in a fantasy novel: a documentary will soon surface showing just how all this fancy stuff was done.

The "House of Cards" clip and the accompanying fun are due to hit Google later today (July 10). UPDATE: The video launch has been pushed back to a later date, it seems.

With one of the finest names in all of festivaldom and a wide-ranging lineup of old favorites and fresh young upstarts, the Italia Wave Love Festival has plenty going for it. That it takes place right along the water in the lovely port city of Livorno, Italy certainly doesn't hurt matters.

This year's Italia Wave Love Festival goes down July 16-19, and among the many who've responded to its call are Gnarls Barkley, the Verve, the Raveonettes, Stereo Total, the Chemical Brothers, the Ting Tings, the Whip, Chrome Hoof, and Appaloosa.

New Single from The Verve

Last week The Verve announced they're releasing their new CD on August 19th. My heart briefly pitter-pattered with excitement as I read the news, but I also was a bit fearful. What will the band will sound like 11 years after the release of Urban Hymns? Will any of their songs ever get past the Bittersweet Symphony comparison? Will this record be an improvement over Richard Ashcroft's solo efforts? You can understand my skepticism. This week the band is streaming their new single Love Is Noise on their MySpace in an effort to put those fears to rest. It's a straight-ahead rocker (no, it doesn't sound like Bittersweet Symphony or Lucky Man) that should do its part to tweak the public's interest in the band again - at least until we can get more than this tiny taste of the new record.

Is it just me, or does a title with the link "get the whole story here" totally waste people's time? What's the point in a post like that? As I see it, add some value and at least let me know why I should go there.

Canada's Hockey Theme ready for a change?

For those of us who grew up in Canada, the Hockey Theme (a.k.a. The Hockey Night in Canada Theme Song) is as familiar as our national anthem. However, the end of the '07/'08 season also means the end of one of the longest running license deals in broadcast history. As of this writing, the CBC and the owner of the song (Copyright Music and Visuals) haven't reached a suitable agreement to continue.

Ah, Memorial Day weekend. It's a time to fire up the grill, crack open a few cold ones, put Astral Weeks on repeat, hit the softball diamond, and start wearing white (not necessarily in that order). But if in the midst of this weekend's relaxation, you find yourself longing to be out in an open field somewhere, surrounded by thousands of your closest friends, watching bands play at extremely loud volumes, then keep this page bookmarked for your convenience. It's Pitchfork's guide to the 2008 summer festival season!

Merge, garnered more radio play than any disc in their 15-year

When I was at the founders and funders dinner in Toronto, I invited myself into a conversation on Holiday Cruises. I, as a Gen-Xer, was decidedly anti-cruise. "Never been on one," I said. "Can't stand the thought of being stuck on a floating Hotel."

I was immediately corrected by a gentleman named, Stuart MacDonald, who I learned later is very well known in the travel circles having started Expedia.ca. He waxed on about how its not a floating hotel, you can go on personal expeditions at numero ...

Mike Gillis: My Old Hockey Coach is the Canucks New GM

OK, I'm excited to hear that Mike Gillis is the new GM for the Vancouver Canucks. Mike was my hockey coach for one season at Queen's University. Mike actually helped me love the game again.

The quality of coaching was horrible for the majority of my hockey career. At the top level in minor hockey, coaches are just as keen or more so to climb the hockey ladder as the players. Unfortunately, in my experience that lead to damaging manipulation and mind games by wanna be coaches on wanna be teena ...

More people like Bret Taylor are talking about the need for Open Data to spur innovation.

we need a wikipedia for data
The interesting thing is, almost every internet company would benefit if this data were freely available. Most internet companies have embraced open source operating systems because every company needs an operating system, and no company wants their OS to be a competitive advantage - they just want it to work. I would argue we are all in the same boat with these factual data s ...

In the case of the reluctant traveler Mr. Stone, the briefness of said plans ain't a complaint, just an observation: Given all the piss-poor "reunions" going down at every state fair in the country this and every summer, it's always nice to see a crew of un-boring living legends like Sly and company getting a little more time in the limelight. [MORE...]

I have talked with Jim about this at SxSW, and he hates the term tax, he calls it (I'll paraphrase) "an agreed upon and negotiated fee (without government intervention) with an ISP, which will eliminate the threat of being sued by the RIAA et al." In this sense Mike Arrington is correct in calling it "Protection Money". However, as the courts have determined ISPs are NOT liable for the data transmitting through their lines. So unless the government legislates away this protection, what exactly is the incentive for an ISP?

DataPortability.org is right to keep the problems small and solvable

I've been thinking a lot about the whole Data Portability Initiative, and I am a supporter of its mission. The biggest challenge for the group is keeping expectations low and projects achievable. After reading Scoble's post and comments on the Road Blocks to Data Portablity I have got Deja Vu all over again. Too many people think this is a straightforward thing to do. The problem space sounds trivial when people say we just need a set of principles and a set of open standards to facilitate thos ...

Music on the radio (and later MTV) has always been free for fans. Advertisers paid for it on the fans behalf. In fact the record labels were willing and eager to actually pay to have their songs playing for ?free? on the radio, but that was deemed illegal.

Record company execs monetized those free plays by selling packages of convenience in the form of discs and tapes so that fans could have, on demand, the music that they liked. Those packages also had collection and connection value to fans, ...

Wow, I'm still somewhat shocked that there are people who believe that subscriptions are the answer. The problem is marketing. Rhapsody (and formally Yahoo!) doesn't know how to properly market the service. Yahoo! Music is the number 1 music site on the Web. If they can't market a music service I'm not sure who can. Still I even heard from one of the smartest guys in the industry that if Apple would offer subscriptions as part of iTunes that will be that, subscriptions will come of age.

RIAA Keeps Settlement Money, Artists May Sue

Quote:
When EMI, Universal Music and Warner music reached settlement agreements with the likes of Napster, KaZaA and Bolt, they collected hundreds of millions of dollars in compensation - money that was supposed to go to artists whose rights had been allegedly infringed upon when the networks were operating with unlicensed music.

Now, according to an article, the managers of some major artists are getting very impatient, as it appears the very people who were supposed to be compensated - the artists - haven’t received anything from the massive settlements. They say the cash - estimated to be as much as $400m - hasn’t filtered through to their clients and understandably they’re getting very impatient.

Microformats are widgets

I've been thinking a lot about microformats lately. I tried thinking about them sometime ago, but I just didn't get it. It seemed like a solution looking for a problem, so I decided to give it no more attention. But after a recent exchange with Tantek Celik in association with Yahoo's recently released plug-in free music player, I got to thinking that microformats or something very similar ARE GOING TO BE the new widget. This is REALLY COOL.

I know Flash widgets are all the rage now. Most of th ...

Rework Music Brainz or start something new

I've gotten a few (3) e-mails asking about why we aren't using Music Brainz for our metadata project, and I think I need to elaborate on what we are doing.

First I do not mean to slag Music Brainz in any way. In fact we are using Music Brainz for our project. We thik it is valuable. However, we cannot avoid the main issue that updating and editing Music Brainz is tedious and complex, and that is the nut of the problem. Wikipedia, with all its crazy syntax, is easy to update and it is immediatel ...

The need for free and open music metadata

I made a post on what I thought was the essential architecture of a digital music package. The top left section represents the metadata or facts that describe:
1. An artist, or
2. A group, or
3. A song, or
4. An album or music collection

Presently there are a number of options for this:

All Music Group (AMG)

AllMusic.com
Pros: Structured data, highly accurate, deep in content for major artists
Cons: Private, terms and license not open, not offered as a Web service, not timely as most indie a ...

The World's Greatest Music Collection is for Sale. Minimum Bid: $3,000,000

Evidently the world's greatest music collection is for sale. The minimum bid to purchase this collection is $3,000,000. It has been valued at $50,000,000. By whom and how this collection was valued I do not know.

I actually find this very intriguing. It is indeed a massive collection:

The listing states:

"Every recording in the collection was purchased by the collection's owner over the past fifty years and represents a lifetime of work and his desire to see the music preserved for future ...

I dropped by the Strutta offices on Friday to say hello to my old office mates and check out their super secret website. Plenty of pleading and a bit of bribing was in order to get the super secret viewing. I brought over some beers to celebrate their internal launch, and to lubricate them sufficiently to weaken their resistance to giving me a quick demo of the site.

It only took one beer, before I was getting the full on demo, but hey told me that I was not allowed to talk about what the site ...

The essential architecture for a digital media package

In my previous post, I described a basic music experience that I would like to have. In this convenient experience there are two types of content with two classifications.

A. The two types of content. Let?s call them:
1. Official Content .
2. User Generated Content , or should I say Fan Generated Content.

and,

B. The two classifications of content. Let?s call them:
1. Free Content. Content that is readily offered without thought to compensation.
2. For Sale Content. Content that the owner ...

Who is the market for digital packages?

Continuing on my digital music packaging discussion. I thought I would talk about the potential market for these packages.

?What?s your market,? asks the VC?

?The people who bought CDs,? is my answer.

?No one buys CDs anymore,? they retort.

?That?s why there is a market for digital music packages,? I reply.

Why we bought music packages?

As I pointed out in my previous post, people* bought vinyl, tape, and CDs for 3 primary reasons:

Convenience, which included listening on-demand, por ...

K.D. Lang Sings Hallelujah

I can't believe I missed this in 2005. I don't watch awards shows so that would be why, but I was reading Saturday's Globe and Mail, and they were profiling one of Canada's greatest voices, k.d. lang and her upcoming album Watershed. In the article they mentioned her Juno performance of 2005 where she sang Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah.

"She single handedly changed the tone of the event from flashy awards show to an encounter with a kind of truth that's rare in the age of reality TV."

Tom Petty Sings the Super Bowl

Tom had a hard act to follow in last year's performance by Prince which kicked. Definitely better than the Rolling Stones debacle, but it kind of felt like a Grateful Dead performance.

That would explain the beard.

It was OK.

It just seemed a bit sedate for a Super Bowl half-time show.

I?m on board with Web 3.0!

A few days ago, I made a couple of posts discussing the need for connecting and collecting in order to monetize digital music (audio files). Ian Bell has since posted (with a little playful poke at Tim O?Reilly) that Web 3.0 will be about context and personalization.

I think context and personalization are flavours of connection and collection. So I guess that puts me on the Web tray point Oh bandwagon. Now who is going to organize this year's conference? Don't forget to trademark it!

For Christmas of 2005, I bought Barenaked on a Stick. It was a USB stick that contained songs mostly from their Barenaked For The Holidays album.

The music was in MP3 format and the USB stick also included videos, live recordings, some of their famous onstage banter, pics, liner notes, and animated GIF buddy icons. The actually physical packaging was pretty sparse and utilitarian as you can see. The price point was $40.00. That?s pretty expensive compared to CDs. However, this package wasn?t ...

Yeah nicer place, but moving is a brutal experience even when it is only 5 blocks away. So imagine Mandy's reaction when I mentioned that I was already booked to attend or present at a number of conferences over the next 6 weeks.

A simple digital music experience that I would pay for

So, here is what I think a simple recorded music experience could be.

Lavaman: Exclusive Interview on Project Opus

New to the Project Opus community, Scotland’s Lavaman was quickly recognized for their virtuoso guitar work. With Al on lead and long-time co-writer John on bass, Lavaman takes listeners by storm with their new album, “Back to Earth.”

Inspired by their life experiences, “Back to Earth” has been in the works for nearly a year. More than an example of musical craftsmanship, it’s also quite the technical feat. With little more than a handful of guitars, a couple of LINE 6 PODs, Cubase SX, Addictive Drums, and a pair of broken hi-fi speakers, the album remains a sonic marvel.

Check out disfunksonfire! by Superfunktion

Go give disfunksonfire! a listen.

Just REALY good fun. If you like the Remy Shand, Jamiroquai, and "early" RHCP you are going to like Superfunktion. There is a faltering nod to Isaac Hayes' Shaft on Superfunkymofo's.

Love the album.
