So with the recent dump of snow in Vancouver, (it looks absolutely BEAUTIFUL!) I am now in the festive, holiday spirits. I bought eggnog, dragged out the indoor and outdoor Christmas lights, put up my wreaths and greenery. Next weekend will be the tree and there's even talk of mulled wine.
In order to get in the spirit of decorating, my husband threw on the iTunes Christmas selection that we listen to each year. I LOVE Christmas music at first and then after a couple of weeks listening to our 100 or so songs, I get thoroughly sick of them and long for some new ones.
Okay, a guilty secret. This year I decided to subscribe to People magazine. I have a toddler. I can only read something that requires a short attention span. And People is about as short as it gets. (And you can all stop looking down your damn noses at me because I know that you're reading it too, whether it's in the checkout line at the grocery store or b/c it's the only alternative to Reader's Digest in your dentist's office.)
In an earlier life, I spent 6 years overseas living and working in countries like Mexico and Thailand. I was young(er), footloose, and definitely into staying up until 3 or 4 am (sometimes until the next morning) checking out the bar scene with its local and imported musicians. It was always a coup to be the first one to find the hot new bar, the latest, greatest up and comer. Live music was everywhere. And somehow, maybe because it was a foreign place, it was easier for me to approach those musicians and strike up a conversation.
